How to Get Information Removed from the Wayback Machine (Archive.org)

Identify archived snapshots, request Internet Archive review, and check the result without assuming removal is guaranteed.

The Wayback Machine stores earlier versions of webpages. Removing a page from the live website does not necessarily remove an archived copy.

Identify the archived pages

Search the original address in the Wayback Machine. Save the original URL, the archived snapshot links, and the capture dates you want reviewed. Distinguish a request about a site you control from one about information on someone else’s site.

Request review

The Internet Archive’s help page directs exclusion requests to info@archive.org and asks that the URL appear in the message. Explain your reason and relationship to the material. There is no guaranteed result or response time stated in that guidance.

Sample request

This is a starting point, not an official form. Replace the brackets with accurate information.

Subject: Request to review archived pages for exclusion

Please review the following pages for exclusion from the Wayback Machine:

Original URLs: [addresses]
Archived snapshots or date range: [details]
My relationship to the material: [explanation]
Reason for the request: [brief explanation]

Please let me know what further information is needed.

Check the result

Keep the correspondence and recheck the specified snapshots. A Wayback request is separate from removing the source page, a search result, or a copy held by another publisher. For court-record websites, see removing information from a website such as UniCourt.
