Verdict
A verdict is a jury’s formal decision on the issues presented at trial. In a criminal case, it states whether the defendant is guilty or not guilty. In a civil case, it may determine who is legally responsible (liability) and how much money should be awarded (damages).
In California Family Law
In California family court, a judge decides the case instead of a jury. A trial before a judge without a jury is called a bench trial. The judge considers the evidence and decides disputed facts. For example, if spouses disagree about when they bought a home, the judge determines what the evidence shows. The judge then applies the law to those facts.
These cases may involve divorce, child custody, child support, spousal support, property division, or domestic violence restraining orders. You will usually hear the terms ruling, order, finding, or judgment instead of verdict.
